Philanthropy"What is our giveability this month?" That's the question our founder, Obert C. Tanner, asked our accountant often. Not only did he invent a colloquialism that's since become legendary, he imbued our culture with a humanitarian tradition—a tradition our employees pick up and carry on with great passion. As a corporate philosophy, O.C. Tanner earmarks at least 10% of profits for giving. Last year, the company donated much more than that, over $4,300,000. Two of our favorite causes are the arts and the humanities. Local symphony, ballet, opera and theater have all been beneficiaries at one time or another. In fact, every other year O.C. Tanner gives 44,000 free tickets for locals to attend the Tanner Gift of Music—a two-night concert series featuring the Utah Symphony, Mormon Tabernacle Choir and guest soloists. We also sponsor the Tanner Lecture Series—an endowment for lectures on human values at universities like Harvard, Yale, Cambridge and Princeton. And fountains are one our favorite corporate gifts, beautifying the landscapes of more than 40 schools, hospitals, parks and universities around the country. Suffice it to say: We wouldn't be much of an appreciation company, if giveability wasn't in our blood. EnvironmentWe appreciate the earth as well as each other. That's why O.C. Tanner has a green policy that has reduced energy consumption by 20%. We recycle our waste products. We're in full compliance with environmental standards in all of our manufacturing and refining operations. And we've eliminated the use of multiple chemicals in two of our manufacturing processes, making our work safer, more efficient and environmentally responsible. |
Key Takeaway
